Dr. Sandra Bloom invited to forum on contemplative practices at Garrison Institute
6/18/2009
Dr. Sandra Bloom, co-director for the Center for Nonviolence and Social Justice and founder of the Sanctuary Model®, will be attending the Transforming Trauma Initiative’s leaders’ forum, “Transforming Trauma: Integrating Contemplative Practices, Neuroscience and Cross-Cultural Perspectives,” to be held on June 17-20 at the Garrison Institute. This forum will engage professionals from the fields of trauma research, mental health, contemplative methodology and cognitive science in a discussion of trauma treatment through the lens of contemplative practices. With the objective of educating all participants on the efficacy of contemplative practices within the context of trauma treatment, the forum will examine psychologically-based therapies with contemplative characteristics, body-based therapies, secular adaptations of spiritual practices, alternative therapies and traditional religious and spiritual practices.
Based on the notion that those who witness and seek to alleviate the trauma of others experience their own pain, the Transforming Trauma Initiative at the Garrison Institute works closely with both survivors of trauma and professionals who experience vicariously induced trauma through their daily work. This initiative supports the Garrison Institute’s Wellness Project by leading trainings for women and men working with domestic violence survivors. The Garrison Institute is a non-profit organization driven by the belief that social and personal change can be reached through contemplative thought and practice.
