 On June 1, 2010, the Center for Nonviolence and Social Justice and the Drexel University School of Public Health co-sponsored an event with keynote speaker Geoffrey Canada of the Harlem Children's Zone. The event launched the Spare the Rod collaborative effort to end corporal punishment.

Dr. Sandra Bloom, an associate professor at the School of Public Health, recently returned home from her third visit to Northern Ireland since 2007 helping residents deal with the trauma of violence. She went back this year to give the keynote address at the European Society of Trauma and Dissociation and consult with the four national trauma advisory panels that were established as part of the peace accord in 1998 to help victims recover from the decades of violence in the country. Her work emphasizes the role of public health in dealing with societal trauma, and comparisons of trauma can be made between Northern Ireland and Philadelphia.

Dr. John Rich was recently interviewed on  the Mark Steiner radio show, WEAA 88.9 in Baltimore. Joining John was Roy Martin, one of the young men John writes about in his book Wrong Place, Wrong Time. Click here for the podcast and show summary. Roy Martin is featured prominently throughout the book, and is now a case manager at the Boston Public Health Commission.
A forum for Baltimore and Maryland civic affairs, The Marc Steiner Show airs Monday thru Thursday from 5-7pm on WEAA 88.9 FM.

Dr. Sandra Bloom's Sanctuary Model is cited in the  new report "Charting a New Course: A Blueprint for Transforming Juvenile Justice in New York State." New York's Office of Children and Family Services, which runs the state's juvenile placement system, adopted Sanctuary in 2007 to establish a more therapeutic environment within its facilities.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder met with Chicago public school studens and elected officials on October 7, 2009, to spark a national conversation about youth violence. His appearance in Chicago draws focus to the city's recent beating death of high school student Derrion Albert, which was captured on video and widely viewed on YouTube.

Former U.S. Senator Max Cleland recently appeared on NPR's Fresh Air to discuss his new memoir Heart of a Patriot. After 9/11, the loss of his Senate seat and the beginning of the Iraq War triggered a relapse of PTSD from his experience of losing three of his limbs as a soldier in Vietnam.

On October 9th, the Center presented a training with Dr. Sandra Bloom focused on the psychobiological effects of trauma and an introduction to trauma-informed approaches to working with traumatized individuals. The majority of participants were Philadelphia Police Officers representing the divisions of Victims Assistance, Major Crimes, and Homicide.

Dr. John Rich, Director of the Center for Nonviolence & Social Justice, has been named to the Institute of Medicine (IOM). Election to the IOM is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.

Dr. Bloom will play a key role in the development of the Center, contributing to our training and research missions in particular. She will also serve as faculty in the doctoral program in Health Policy and Social Justice at Drexel University's School of Public Health.

Drexel University and the Center for Nonviolence and Social Justice had the honor of recently hosting two renowned civil  rights leaders. On November 10th, the Center held an intimate roundtable discussion with Ahmed Kathrada, South African human rights leader and prison confidante of Nelson Mandela. On November 12th, Barbara Hogan, South Africa’s newly appointed Health Minister, was the featured speaker of this year’s Jonathan Mann Health & Human Rights Memorial Lecture, hosted by Drexel University’s School of Public Health.
